The Abbey after the Dissolution

The closure of an abbey or priory usually resulted in an immediate and thorough raiding of its riches. Any valuables like silver plate and altar furniture were sent to the King’s Wardrobe, useful metals like the bells and brasses went to the armories, while the lead off the roofs was melted down into ingots bearing the king’s mark. Demolition, especially of the church, was usually swift, not only to gain a quick profit but also to render it unusable should the tide turn against Henry. Religious houses located in towns and cities were the most likely to be built over and today just an odd gatehouse, monastic building or place-name may survive to mark where an abbey once stood. Some sites were saved from destruction, though what part was retained depended upon its role prior to dissolution and the requirements of the new owners.
